Sustainable procurement

Each year, NS spends an average of €1.3 billion on goods and services from over 3,000 suppliers across 26 countries. These suppliers provide a wide range of products and services, including new trains, train parts, construction projects, IT solutions and cleaning services. Our procurement has a significant impact on society. That is why we work with our suppliers to reduce negative effects and increase positive impact.

The impact of our procurement

What we purchase largely determines how sustainable we are. Around 40 per cent of our total CO₂ emissions come from our procurement. We do not yet use circular materials everywhere, which causes raw materials to run out more quickly. Our procurement also affects biodiversity, for example through food and drink offerings and the maintenance of greenery around stations.

Together with our suppliers, we make a difference. We work to create fair and sustainable supply chains that focus on people, the environment and society. This approach also creates opportunities for people facing difficulties entering the labour market.

Sustainability together

Our suppliers play a vital role in making our products and services more sustainable. We encourage them to find smart, sustainable solutions that are affordable. By carefully considering all options, we make conscious choices together. This helps reduce CO₂ emissions, increase the use of reusable materials, and contribute positively to people, the environment and society.
